Breton pink onion

A regional onion

Round in shape, the Breton pink onion has a coppery pink skin. Its pinkish flesh releases a fruity aroma when chopped. With a unique flavour and a crunchy and juicy texture, the flesh of this onion is meltingly soft and can even be sweet when cooked. It is recommended by many chefs.

Farmed in North Finistère for more than 400 years, this onion is well suited to the temperate, mild and humid climate. The growing area is larger than that of the PDO Roscoff onion.

Health benefits

Low in calories, the pink onion has a high vitamin C content. It is known for its high antioxidant content, quercetin in particular.

A sweet, fruity flavour

Can be eaten raw or cooked. When cooked, it has a fruity, sweet flavour that is much appreciated.

  • Raw, its aromatic properties give character to salads and are the perfect accompaniment for a steak sandwich.
  • Cooked, it holds its shape well and reveals very fruity flavours. Great for all kinds of recipes (tarts, soups and confits), it is delicious served with fish and meat.

Calendar of availability

Sown in February – March, the onion is harvested in August before being stored in a dry, well-ventilated place. Breton pink onions keep very well and are available until June.
